NEWBERRY AREA

Newberry is the county seat of Luce County and is located on highway M-123, about 3 miles north of highway M-28.
The town of Newberry sprung up in 1881 as a railway stop along the Soo Line Railroad. The village was laid out by
and named for John S. Newberry, a former congressman and Detroit area entrepreneur. Many of the original streets
are named for his children. Early industry included iron smelting, logging, and farming. The Newberry State Mental
Hospital was built south of town in 1895 and was in operation for just short of 100 years.

Logging and the lumber industry continue to be major employers in the area today. Prior visitors to the TVC Car Shows
have enjoyed the Logging Museum site. The State Hospital complex is now home to the Newberry Correctional Facility.
Luce County is a major tourist area and sportsperson mecca. Snowmobiling is very prominent during the winter season.
Hunting, fishing, and other sports pursuits are greatly enjoyed by locals and visitors alike. Luce County has many
natural wonders, most significantly the Tahquamenon Falls. This beautiful attraction is the second highest waterfall east
of the Mississippi River.
